This multi strand lei print derives from a large original painting that is part of a Lei Series. This Lei represents many things, but its primary representation is that of ROYALTY. The feathered lei depicted is made in the Wili Poepoe style and is often a highly prized heirloom that historically symbolized royalty, high status, and enduring spiritual protection.
Feather leis were traditionally made from beautiful endemic bird feathers and were worn by Ali’i (chief or chiefess), royalty and to show rank, prestige or power.
The other leis depicted in this painting such as the Cigar and Kukui Lei, Maile-Style Ti Leaf lei holds many more meanings such as,- respect, honor, good fortune, purification, protection, unity and celebration. The Hawaiian Tiger Cowrie Shell featured as one of the main pieces of the painting is known as being protectors to the coral reefs as they help control invasive sponges. They were also used in the past by Hawaiians as lures to capture Octopus.
This “Royal” painting’s natural elements include:
Goose Coquille Feathers
Cigar Flower
Ti Leaves
Kukui Nut
Hawaiian Tiger Cowrie Shell
Flea Cone Shell
Momi Shell
Monstera Leaf
